Jessner Peel Aftercare

No peel of whatever strength is considered safe unless you take care of the treated area after the procedure ends.  Jessner peel aftercare too becomes necessary if you want to get the results for which the treatment is done.

Taking care of the treated area after a peeling procedure is the sole responsibility of the patient and the role of a skin specialist in this regard restricts to educating the patient with the required post peel instructions.  If the instructions are followed seriously, the healing remains normal and the results will be as expected.  Jessner peel aftercare involves some Dos and Don’ts that are to be followed carefully if you want to get the benefit from this peeling treatment.

After the Peeling Treatment

Once the procedure completes, you should take well care of the treated area.  The skin will become ‘tight’ and dry for a day or so after the treatment.  With its brown-red appearance, it will become as if it has been sunburned and this condition remains for a couple of days.  Peeling starts and continues for some time.  You may experience mild burning and itching which will be the normal and harmless side effects of a peeling treatment.  You should, however, control the urge to scratch or touch the treated area.

Post peel instructions will be given by the treating specialist which will be as follow, more or less.

  • Do not pick or pull the peeling or flaking skin; it could lead to bleeding, scabs, rawness and the risk of infection grows.  Moreover, the healing time can be prolonged and the results may differ, negatively of course.
  • Cover the treated area as directed by the treating specialist.
  • If swelling appears on the treated area, the eyes may close considerably in extreme cases, do not get alarmed since the conditions would resolve by itself in a short period of time.
  • Keep the head elevated while lying down or sleeping.
  • When you have to wash the hair, do it carefully so that the treated area isn’t affected.
  • Apply the soothing cream recommended by the dermatologist.
  • Avoid sauna for about two weeks.
  • Don’t engage in strenuous exercises for about two weeks.
  • Avoid any other activity that produces sweating, which can cause not only some discomfort but may also influence negatively the results or the healing process.
  • Do not use Renova or Retin-A for about three weeks.
  • Avoid using any product containing any chemical acid including Retinol creams, for about two weeks after the procedure.
  • Avoid using any kind of topical exfoliant for a week after the procedure.
  • The skin becomes very sensitive after the treatment, you should, therefore protect it as directed.
  • Avoid direct exposure to the sun; ensure you wear a sunscreen while going outdoors.
  • When to wash the face should be checked, normally, you would have to avoid washing the treated area for some time.
  • When to wear cosmetic makeup should be checked with the specialist, who will advise you accordingly.
  • You have to apply a good moisturizer to hydrate the skin during the daytime, and use pure petroleum jelly or other soothing skin preparation before going to bed.

The above list of Jessner peel aftercare instructions can’t be taken as complete, and your doctor or dermatologist is the right source to advice you things that would be more specific to your case.   Not every case experiences the same feel after a treatment and while some may need the normal instructions to be followed, some may require something more to be done for a normal recovery.  All depends on an individual case and if the treatment is done at a skin clinic, you will remain well informed of all the necessary details.

In any case, one thing you have to keep in mind that unless you take well care of all the post peel requirements, you won’t be getting the desired results.
